About
A short version of the last fifteen years.
2011–2015
Oil and gas
My first job was working out which equipment needed inspecting, and when.
I studied materials engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung and joined the oil and gas industry after graduating in 2011. Most of my work was risk-based inspection. That means working out which vessels, pipes and platforms are most likely to fail, and how soon someone should inspect them. I worked on assessments for Pertamina’s Refinery Unit IV, for HESS’s Ujung Pangkah field (four offshore platforms and three onshore plants), and for Santos’s facilities in Eastern Australia.
In 2013 I moved to Norway for a master’s degree in offshore technology. During the degree I worked on material selection for a subsea heat exchanger at FMC Technologies, and on inspection engineering for the Martin Linge platform.
The screening step of an assessment is qualitative, and the result depends a lot on the judgement of the engineer doing it. That is the problem I later took into my PhD.

The PhD
In 2016 I started a PhD on using machine learning for that same inspection work.
I did the PhD at the University of Stavanger, supervised by Prof. R.M. Chandima Ratnayake. I built neural network models for the screening assessment, used ontologies to identify damage mechanisms, and applied clustering to group piping into corrosion loops. One of the papers won Best Student Paper at ISOPE 2018 in Sapporo.
I finished in 2019. The thesis is titled Artificial Intelligence Approaches to Lean Risk-Based Inspection Assessment, and the papers are listed on the publications page.

GetGo, gaw.ai and Nomura
After the PhD I co-founded a computer vision startup.
I started GetGo with Erdian Tomy and worked as its Chief AI Officer. Our first product was a cashierless kiosk for offices, which used computer vision to recognise what people picked up. When COVID-19 closed the offices in 2020, we reused the same technology to build a visual search engine for fashion e-commerce. GetGo went through the Gojek Xcelerate accelerator that year.
After GetGo I started gaw.ai, which took computer vision back to the industry I came from. We built software that reads piping and instrumentation diagrams, recognises the symbols and text, and exports equipment and line lists. A second tool generated corrosion loops automatically, based on one of my PhD papers.
I then joined Nomura Research Institute as a machine learning engineer. One of my projects was a camera-based system that approves refuelling at self-service petrol stations. Tatsuno released it in Japan in 2026 under the name AIGO.
2021–2026
Bank Rakyat Indonesia
I spent four and a half years heading the AI department at BRI.
I joined Bank Rakyat Indonesia in October 2021 and headed BRIBRAIN, the department that builds the bank’s AI products. Two of them took most of our attention.
Sabrina is the bank’s customer assistant. By 2024 it was handling about two in five of the messages sent to the Contact Center. We worked with Microsoft to move it onto Azure OpenAI, so it could understand regional languages such as Javanese and Sundanese.
WISE is a search tool for frontline staff. When a customer asks for help, staff use it to find the right procedure.
BRIBRAIN won IDC Future Enterprise Awards in 2023 and in 2024. I left the bank in April 2026.

2026–
Now
I lead AI engineering at BukuWarung.
BukuWarung makes bookkeeping and payment tools for small businesses in Indonesia. My team builds the internal platforms that other teams use to automate their workflows. At the moment that means an AI agent factory, an AI voice studio and an agentic CRM.
The experience page has the full timeline. My talks are on the speaking page, and my public work is on the code page.
What I work on
- AI agents and workflow automation
- Applied machine learning in production
- Conversational AI and large language models
- Computer vision
- Risk, reliability and asset integrity
- Building and leading AI teams
